Strength & standing
Every child leaves our kura taller than they arrived — proud of their whakapapa, confident in their voice, ready for what comes next.
He kupu nō te Tumuaki
It is with great pride and privilege that I welcome you to Te Kura o Whakarewarewa, a kura deeply grounded in its cultural heritage, its people and its whenua. Situated in the heart of Whakarewarewa, Rotorua, on the ancestral lands of Tūhourangi, our kura provides a learning environment where identity, culture, language and a strong sense of belonging are central to the educational journey of every tamaiti.
As you enter through our carved gateway, you are welcomed into a community where learning is enriched by our history, traditions, values and aspirations for future generations. We are committed to nurturing confident, capable and culturally grounded learners who are equipped to succeed both within our kura and beyond.
At Te Kura o Whakarewarewa, we offer two distinct learning pathways to meet the needs and aspirations of our tamariki and whānau. Rūmaki provides an immersive learning environment where te reo Māori is the primary language of instruction, supporting the revitalisation and strengthening of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga. Auraki delivers learning primarily through English, while embedding te reo Māori, tikanga and mātauranga Māori throughout the curriculum.
Both pathways are underpinned by our commitment to…
Our kura is guided by four foundational values: Mana – Pride; Aroha – Empathy; Whakaute – Respect; and Tika me te pono – Honesty and Integrity. These values shape our relationships, inform our decisions and guide the way we learn, work and interact as a kura community.
We warmly invite you to visit Te Kura o Whakarewarewa, experience the richness of our learning environment and discover the opportunities we provide for our tamariki to grow, learn and succeed.
Our values
Four values guide how we teach, how we play and how we care for one another across our kura.
Mana
Every child leaves our kura taller than they arrived — proud of their whakapapa, confident in their voice, ready for what comes next.
Aroha
We know our learners by name and by story. Whānau are welcome in the classroom, at the gate and around the table — always.
Whakaute
Respect for one another, for our tikanga, for our environment, and for the generations who carried this kura before us.
Tika me te pono
We do what is right, even when it is hard. Honesty, fairness and responsibility are the ground we stand on.
Two pathways, one kura
Whakarewarewa School is a dual-medium school. Both pathways share the same values, the same care and the same high expectations — they differ in the language your child learns through.
A full immersion pathway where teaching, learning and daily life in the kura are carried in te reo Māori, building confident, fluent speakers grounded in tikanga.
A mainstream English-medium pathway where te reo Māori and tikanga are part of everyday learning — and where every learner is stretched and supported.
