Principal's Welcome

A message of welcome from Matua Boxer — our whakapapa, our two pathways, the values we live by, and the vision we hold for every tamaiti.

Throw your eyes to Pōhaturoa, Tūturu standing steadfast, day and night!

Throw your eyes to the flowing waters of Puarenga, to the gravelly shores of the sulphurous waters that impart their bitterness to the food of the lake.

Throw your eyes to Pōhutu, to the ngāwhā and the geysers erupting forth! Bubbling by day and by night, bubbling by night and by day!

This is Te Whakarewarewatanga-o-te-ope-taua-a-Wāhiao, the place where Wāhiao's war party emerged and performed their haka of defiance!

Let us never forget the wisdom handed down by our tūpuna. In the water, the kōura is black, but once brought ashore, it turns red. We lift up the black; we raise up the red!

Together, we strive for excellence and success.

Welcome to Te Kura o Whakarewarewa

It is with great pride and privilege that I welcome you to Te Kura o Whakarewarewa, a kura deeply grounded in its cultural heritage, its people and its whenua. Situated in the heart of Whakarewarewa, Rotorua, on the ancestral lands of Tūhourangi, our kura provides a learning environment where identity, culture, language and a strong sense of belonging are central to the educational journey of every tamaiti.

As you enter through our carved gateway, you are welcomed into a community where learning is enriched by our history, traditions, values and aspirations for future generations. We are committed to nurturing confident, capable and culturally grounded learners who are equipped to succeed both within our kura and beyond.

At Te Kura o Whakarewarewa, we offer two distinct learning pathways to meet the needs and aspirations of our tamariki and whānau. Rūmaki provides an immersive learning environment where te reo Māori is the primary language of instruction, supporting the revitalisation and strengthening of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga. Auraki delivers learning primarily through English, while embedding te reo Māori, tikanga and mātauranga Māori throughout the curriculum.

Every child is recognised, valued and supported to achieve their full potential.

Both pathways are underpinned by our commitment to providing high-quality educational opportunities in an environment where every child is recognised, valued and supported to achieve their full potential. We work in partnership with whānau to ensure our tamariki experience a strong sense of belonging, develop a positive cultural identity and are encouraged to strive for excellence in all aspects of their learning.

Our kura is guided by four foundational values: Mana – Pride; Aroha – Empathy; Whakaute – Respect; and Tika me te pono – Honesty and Integrity. These values shape our relationships, inform our decisions and guide the way we learn, work and interact as a kura community. They are not simply words; they are principles we endeavour to demonstrate through our everyday actions and the way we care for our tamariki, whānau and one another.
